      Scholarships for Undergraduate Students

There are many scholarships available to undergraduate students currently enrolled at Memorial.

Most of the scholarships are awarded on a recommendation from the academic unit. Students should declare a faculty and/or major as early as possible if they wish to be considered for certain faculty-specific undergraduate scholarships.
NOTE: Applications are only needed where stated in the description.
      Scholarship standing
For undergraduate students, scholarship standing is defined as a 75% average at the end of two out of the last three semesters in the previous scholarship year and the successful completion of not less than 30 credit hours in those two semesters. In considering students who complete more than 30 credit hours in those two semesters, the average on the actual number of credit hours taken will be reviewed. Students who fail one or more courses during the scholarship year, regardless of the number of courses completed, will not be eligible for scholarships.
      Scholarship standing for co-op students
Students who do not meet the above definition because of scheduled work terms, scholarship standing is defined as a 75% average over the most recent two academic semesters in the preceding four semesters in which they must have been enrolled as regular full-time Co-op students. Those who fail an academic course or work term during the four semester period will not be eligible for scholarships.
      First class standing
Defined as having a 3.5 out of 4.0 GPA at the end of the two semesters being considered for scholarship standing. Not all students who meet the above definitions of scholarship standing will receive a scholarship.
      Transfer students
Students transferring to Memorial University of Newfoundland from Universities/Colleges in Canada which are members of Universities Canada and who meet scholarship standing as defined by Memorial University of Newfoundland will be eligible for undergraduate scholarships in the year in which they transfer. Such students must notify the Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards Office in writing of their intention to transfer and provide a complete transcript for the year in question.

      Graduate funding

Students may refer to the Guidelines for the Awarding of SGS Fellowships and Graduate Student Support for more information on internal funding and awards.

      Internal funding sources

The value of funding will depend on the graduate program a student is admitted to. Funding sources include:
      • School of Graduate Studies fellowships – ranging from $4,000 to $12,000 per year
      • graduate assistantships (employment) – ranging from $3,000 to $6,000 in accordance with the TAUMUN collective agreement

      External awards

We strongly encourage graduate students to apply for scholarships and external awards to enhance their qualifications and increase your graduate funding. Students should pay particular attention to graduate scholarships offered by theNatural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), and Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). If a student is successful in receiving a scholarship or external funding, that amount may replace a portion or all of the funding offered in the letter of admission. In most cases, however, the student will receive more than the initial funding offer.

      Nomination process

Recommendations for funding packages are made by the academic unit at the time of admission and approved by the Dean of Graduate Studies. Students who are interested in receiving this type of financial support should answer yes to the question "Do you want to be considered for financial assistance" on your application to graduate school.
For external awards, a separate application is normally required. Please consult the website of the appropriate agency or organization and submit a complete application by the deadline.
