Brandon University Scholarships and Awards

Seth Friesen As an athlete Seth Friesen knows a lot about balance. Driven to excel in the classroom and on the volleyball court, Friesen found a place where he didn’t have to sacrifice his goals in either area when he chose to attend Brandon University. A top-notch student and volleyball player in high school, Friesen had plenty of options to choose from when it came time to select a university, but the Brandonite found the perfect blend of academics and athletics right here at home. “The volleyball program is strong here and allowed me to stay close to compete at a high level,” Friesen says. A towering six-foot-eight presence at the left-side position, Friesen has emerged as one of the top players in the Canada West Universities Athletic Conference and has helped the Brandon University Bobcats find a place among the elite teams in Canada. Despite the time and commitment required to compete at a high level, he has also maintained excellent grades as he works toward his Bachelor of Scie...

Celebrating 110 years of Geology at BU Canada

Celebrating 110 years of Geology at BU February 23, 2021 An important part of Geology study is field work, such as the geological survey conducted by these students at Great Bear Lake in the Northwest Territories. Brandon University’s (BU’s) Department of Geology has an extra reason to celebrate as Provincial Engineering and Geoscience Week in Manitoba approaches from February 28 to March 7. This year marks 110 years in the study of geoscience at BU. Students in the Geology program learn about the multi-billion-year history of the Earth and its composition, its fascinating tectonic processes, evolution of life, and impacts on society and our daily lives. Everything we use comes from the Earth, and geoscientists work hard to ensure a sustainable, healthy and prosperous future for everyone. “The rocks and minerals that we study haven’t changed much since the first geology course was taught at Brandon College 110 years ago, but the science and our department are continuously evolvin...

Brandon University is celebrating Indigenous Excellence. Brandon University is celebrating the achievements of Indigenous students, faculty, staff and the community in the weeks leading up to spring solstice and beyond. “We plan and celebrate an Indigenous Excellence Week every year, and this year’s just kept expanding until we had a month and more,” said Chris Lagimodiere, BU’s Director of the Indigenous Peoples’ Centre and Aboriginal Initiatives. “Really, Indigenous excellence is a focus throughout the year, and this is a great opportunity to bring particular focus to some of the accomplishments we are most proud of.” Some events started as early as late January, and events are planned through to at least the spring solstice in March, with eyes also set on National Indigenous Peoples’ Day on June 21. The spread-out nature of the events takes into consideration the ongoing pandemic, which is preventing traditional in-person celebrations. “We are taking a broader approach to Indi...
