Brandon University fights stigma of mental illness through film
Movies for Mental Health’ workshop to create dialogue and action
This upcoming Mental Illness Awareness Week, Brandon University will host their second annual “Movies for Mental Health” an event conducted in partnership with Student Services and North American organization Art With Impact. The event will take place on campus in Evans Theatre from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Monday, October 7. This two-hour workshop is one of many taking place on college and university campuses this academic year.“One of the biggest barriers for our students to reach out for support continues to be related to stigma,” said Marsha Harris, Personal Counsellor in Student Services at Brandon University. “Through events like M4MH our hope is to continue to work towards breaking down stigma, create opportunities for individuals to build communities of support, and bring current and accurate information about mental health to our campus. Our students need to know that they are not alone,”
Movies for Mental Health is a free workshop and dinner will be provided for attendees. The workshop consists of a facilitated discussion, viewing of three short films from Art With Impact’s ground-breaking OLIVE Film Collection on the topic of mental health, and a community and campus resource panel connecting attendees with accessible mental health resources in the region. This event free and open to students, staff, and faculty of the university as well as to community members.
